This is a friendly, informal, self-help group suitable for those with some knowledge of painting and drawing. Members are free to pursue their own interests: flower painting, miniatures, landscapes, etc. We learn from each other's abilities and experience. The occasional still- life and a monthly DVD provide fresh ideas.

Water colour painting is the norm but the use of other media is encouraged, with the subject matter ranging from still life, imaginative composition and occasionally from the model. We also try to take advantage of good weather to paint outside.

Bridge lessons for those who have little or no knowledge of how to play the game, although knowledge of trick winning card games such as whist is always helpful. This course runs from late April to June. There are eight weekly classes for 14 members with individual workstations. We charge a fee to cover the cost of these facilities. It is for absolute beginners and is designed to get them started. Those joining are expected to have access to a computer so they can practise the lessons learned using the notes provided.

This course has no mathematics, and is all about what you already know. Its aim is to explain how countries actually work. We will discuss what is driving the globalisation and economic disparity phenomena, as well as the causes that lie behind slumps and booms. This group is for those interested in dramatic events of world-wide naval history, mainly during the period from 17th C 'Ships-of-the-Line' to the nuclear age. Pilates is a non-aerobic body conditioning fitness routine that helps to not only build flexibility, but also strength and control. This class will concentrate on mat-work, focusing on building the body's core strength. It will be aimed at beginners although all abilities are welcome. A workshop for jewellery and silverwork, open each week during term time. The A group is especially for beginners. All tools are available, and help in ordering metals and stones. A weekly charge of £2.50 is made to cover the cost of basic materials. Because of the rising cost of silver, we will also explore the possibilities of the non-precious metals.

This small group meets monthly to study and discuss the works of JRR Tolkien. As well as The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit, the group examines The Silmarillion, The Children of Hurin and other works. The film, stage and radio adaptations of Tolkien's works are also considered.

All walks start at a meeting point which will be advised at the start of term by the Group Leader. The distance of walks is about four to six miles taking two to three hours. The aim of the class will be to maintain flexibility, strengthen the body and cultivate good health in a non-competitive and relaxed environment. The group will concentrate on the classical yoga postures and breathing techniques of Hatha Yoga.
