This group is for anyone who enjoys the challenge of drawing and now wishes to explore their

started during the group session can be worked on at home into more finished pictures.

ART - PAINTING 1 (WATERCOLOUR WORKSHOP)
This is a friendly, informal, self-help group suitable for those with some knowledge of painting and
drawing. Members are free to pursue their own interests: flower painting, miniatures, landscapes,
etc. We learn from each other’s abilities and experience. The occasional still-life and a monthly DVD
provide fresh ideas.

The group is open to all levels of ability, from beginners to more advanced. Water colour painting is
the norm but the use of other media is encouraged, with the subject matter ranging from still life,
imaginative composition and occasionally from the model. We also try to take advantage of good
weather to paint outside.

This group is for beginners and more experienced painters who wish to experiment and expand their
work in an informal and friendly group.

ART APPRECIATION
This Group is for all those who appreciate art in all its forms. It is run by 4 coordinators and members
will be expected to provide part or all of the programme at each meeting by giving short or long talks
on their chosen subjects - an artist, a painting, a sculpture etc. Visits to Art Galleries and an
occasional guest speaker may be arranged.

AVIATION & MILITARY HISTORY
This combined group will cover the full spectrum of personalities, campaigns and events from
Hannibal to the Gulf Wars, and aviators, aircraft and aviation history from the first flights of Icarus
and the Wright brothers to Space Travel. Members are encouraged to come forward and speak on
their own particular interests and occasional visits to places of military or aviation interest will be
arranged.

AWARENESS
Understanding more of ourselves and others, as we continue to grow and reach more of our
potential. As requested, we will be going over some of the ground we covered in our earlier groups,
and breaking new ground as we share our collective experience and wisdom. This group will be most
suitable for those who have participated in previous groups run by Lillian.

BEADING
All aspects of beading, from restringing old pearls and necklaces to new creations from the many
beads available. Those wishing for excitement can experiment with bead embroidery, wrapping,
braids, weaving, wire-work etc. Information on sources of materials will be available. (If you want
inspiration, visit the Bead Fair at Farnham Maltings, 12-13 July).

BRIDGE BEGINNERS
Bridge lessons for those who have little or no knowledge of how to play the game, although
knowledge of trick winning card games such as whist is always helpful. Students will be taught how
to bid and the rudiments of playing the cards so that they can play socially between lessons in order
to practise and build up experience.

BRIDGE INTERMEDIATE
Supervised bridge for those in their second year onwards who seek to practise and gain
experience in playing hands. Guidance will focus on card play and playing techniques. The course
is complementary to the Beginners Course where a greater emphasis is placed on bidding.

BRIDGE RUBBER PLAY
The current group consists of a mix of those who have played bridge for many years and those who
have taken it up in retirement. No tuition is given; it is recommended that newcomers to bridge have
at least two years tuition through U3A Beginners or Adult Education before joining this group. This
group provides a means of gaining experience and confidence, and has been used as a stepping
stone to Bridge Clubs.

INTRODUCTION TO DUPLICATE BRIDGE
The group is for players who have a basic knowledge of a bridge system and some playing
experience but may not have played Duplicate (which is played in Bridge clubs). They can gain
experience and get greater confidence from these sessions. Advice is available. Partners not

CALLIGRAPHY
Calligraphy, the art of beautiful hand writing, starts with learning the Foundation Hand style of writing
and how to set out, balance and decorate a piece of work. We learn how to use colour and apply our
newly-acquired skills to the creation of Birthday, Easter and Christmas cards, posters, quotations and
poems.

COMPUTER WORKSHOP/FORUM
The aim of the group is to discuss particular aspects of computer applications at each meeting. Areas
covered will be ‘Security software, Anti-virus, Firewall, Spam, etc’ as well as Search Engines,
Freeware/Shareware, Photo, alternative Browsers and others. It is aimed at those with reasonable
computer skills and an enquiring mind. Using a wireless enabled lapTop and projector we will be
connecting to the internet to demonstrate aspects of the subjects under discussion. Part of the time
will be made available to attempt (!) to resolve members’ computer problems!

COUNTRY DANCING
An ideal way of taking exercise in a relaxed atmosphere. Barn dancing and traditional country
dances are included. No previous experience is needed and you do not need to come with a partner.
The main requirements are an ability to laugh and to tell right from left! All dances are walked through
first before being performed to music.

CREATIVE DANCE
Creative Dance should appeal to any member interested in movement and dance. The class is
suitable for people of any age and fitness level. The main requirement is a desire to dance and have
fun. Everyone will work within their own capabilities, physically and creatively, in a friendly and
supportive environment. Sometimes movements will be by example, at other times participants will
be encouraged to make up their own sequences. Exploration will include working individually, with a
partner or in groups.

CURRENT AFFAIRS 1
The aim is for discussion to range over all aspects of current affairs. Core Topics are selected for
each meeting with other Topics arising at the meeting. On occasions a group member (volunteer) will
prepare a short presentation on a selected Topic both for information and as a basis for a focused
exchange of views. An informal approach is employed at meetings to encourage open discussion,
whilst ensuring all members wishing to do so have the opportunity to speak.

CURRENT AFFAIRS 2
The Group meets to discuss a range of local, national and international Topics during which members
express their views and the sessions become lively and interesting. We endeavour to concentrate
on matters other than politics, whilst appreciating that this subject can affect many aspects of
everyday life. Members are encouraged to lead part of a session if they have an interest in a specific
subject.

ECONOMICS AND REALITY
Forget your preconceptions about college economics, with its complexity and mathematics. This
course has no mathematics, and is all about what you already know. Its aim is to explain how
countries actually work. You will discover why political utterances are often unsatisfactory. Instead
you acquire a structured and hopeful way of evaluating national and international economic issues.
We will discuss what is driving the globalization and economic disparity phenomena, review a bit of
history and also touch on ethics.

FITNESS
Through this activity we seek to promote fitness in a relaxed, non-threatening and pleasurable
setting. Simple movements are intended to develop suppleness stretch and strength and, after a
brief introduction, are performed to music. It is not aerobic as such. Men and women of all abilities
(and disabilities!) are equally welcome unless advised otherwise by a doctor.

FLOWER ARRANGING
This group will pool together their own ideas and learn the basics of Flower Arranging. The group will
be informal and learn various styles of arrangements.

FRENCH CONVERSATION
This is a small friendly group of about a dozen people who enjoy speaking French and are
reasonably fluent. Everyone has the chance to present a Topic which often leads to a general
discussion. Mistakes are corrected at the time and some grammar revision is done as the need
arises.

FRENCH INTERMEDIATE
Conversations take place in a very friendly atmosphere and range over every Topic under the sun,
prepared or not. With a group limited to eighteen, everyone has a chance to speak and the leader
takes the opportunity to correct mistakes and explain the grammatical reason for that correction, also
trying to improve the use of vocabulary and turns of phrase. Reading is encouraged, with books
provided, but no home-work is given.

GARDENING
This is a self help group! By exchanging knowledge and ideas we aim for a better understanding of
gardening with its problems and techniques. General discussions, occasional talks by experts and
possibly garden visits will, hopefully, enable everyone to get more out of their gardens, no matter how
large or small.

GENEALOGY
Throughout the year we will be exploring in more depth Family History already begun. We will include
the use of computers as a Genealogical aid and share our experiences in using familiar and lesser
known websites. There will be opportunities to learn about the special interests of members in the
group and from time to time there will be outside speakers. We’ll even attempt to solve the problems
of those who’ve reached a ‘dead end’ in their research! There will be a visit to the National Archives
at Kew.
We hope to offer something for everyone at every level. Everyone is welcome to join us in this
fascinating and often frustrating hobby

GENEALOGY BEGINNERS GROUP
This small group is for complete beginners to Genealogy. It will run during the Autumn Term only. We
will explain the main areas of research using Census Returns, Civil Registration and Parish
Registers both on line and from Record Offices. There will be plenty of opportunity to ask questions.
Everyone is welcome to attend the main meetings as well.

GERMAN CONTINUATION 1 & 2
Being fluent in German, the Group Leader is experienced in teaching German as a foreign language
in a relaxed atmosphere. Whilst fluency will take many years of study, the memberswill be able to
acquire the basic skills of German, for their own enjoyment, especially if they intend to visit a German
speaking country. This course offers an introduction to one of the most vivid and vibrant modern
languages.

JAZZ APPRECIATION
A new group in which members will participate fully in making presentations, based on their

LINE DANCING
This group carries on from last year and is for those who have some experience of line dancing and
know at least the basic steps – such as ‘grapevine’ and ‘shuffling’. It is not for absolute beginners.
The aim is for members to improve previously learnt skills and to tackle slightly more challenging
dances. New members are most welcome to join this very friendly and supportive class.
A modest additional charge will be made each term to cover costs.

MUSIC APPRECIATION
The objective is to enhance the appreciation and enjoyment of music by exploring the background -
historical and musical - of the music, played on CDs with presentation and discussion. Sometimes
the concentration is on the work of a particular composer whilst at other times we review particular
musical features from the work of various composers. Although most of the music is classical, no
prior musical knowledge is required, simply an open mind and willingness to give a fair hearing to
sometimes unfamiliar music.

This group covers popular classical music in the first half and the other half includes anything other than classical music such as jazz, music from shows, well known singers etc.

NAVAL HISTORY
This group, organised by a team of coordinators, is for those interested in the dramatic events of world wide naval history, mainly during the period from mid 17th C ‘Ships-of-the-Line’ through to the nuclear age. Volunteers from the group give talks on a wide range of naval subjects. Anyone interested in the sea and ships, whether or not they wish to give talks, is most welcome.

NEEDLEWORK, CROSS-STITCH AND TAPESTRY
Members of this group are free to choose what to do - cross-stitch on aida fabric, tent stitch on canvas or any other embroidery stitches. They can work from a kit or design their own pattern and get help to make greeting cards, pictures, needle cases, pin cushions, sampler bags, cushion covers, stool Tops or bell pulls and much else besides.

This is a study group with lively discussion and analysis of poems. Each month we take a different poet or theme. Last year we made a successful transition whereby several members volunteered to lead an entire meeting. The Group Leader filled in the rest. The change stimulated everybody.

Wendy says – relax with verse, blank or rhyming. Bring your favourites from Wordsworth to Wendy Cope, or write something for our enjoyment. Alternatively, just come and listen. We’ll have a monthly theme, chosen by members – Cabbages or Kings, Stevie Smith, Joyce Grenfell, Pam Ayres, McGough or what you will. Amateur rhymesters welcome, from creators of limericks to serious verse.The sky’s the limit and all in comfy home surroundings.

SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY
Most members of this group contribute by sharing experiences with others or making a small
presentation themselves. Because the ideas and contacts for prospective presenters come from the
membership we maintain an enthusiastic and friendly atmosphere. Future meeting plans include
layman’s guides to how things work (e.g. mobile phones, internet, electronics in every day life),
nuclear energy, residual chemicals in foods and agriculture, bio-fuels - whatever members choose!
We are open to all: ex-scientists and technologists, as well as those with just a general interest in
science and technology.

SHAKESPEARE
One to three sessions are devoted to a chosen play. Features explored include themes, plot, diction,
characters, background, interpretation and performances. Those new to Shakespeare are welcome
as well as those who have been studying him for some time. Everyone contributes to group
discussion. Part of each session is spent reading scenes from the play and we try to conclude with
some form of illustrative video. When there is a Shakespeare play at the Woking Victoria Theatre,
we have an introductory session as part of our meeting just before the performances.

SILVER & GOLD: A Social & Economic History
Precious metals have affected our lives from Ancient times to the 21st century as commodity, craft
and currency. We will discover the use, design and working of silver and gold, and see how changing
the designs and fashion mirror the history of Britain and Europe. Full notes will be available following
each session for £1.

SILVERWORK
A workshop for jewellery and silverwork, with an opportunity for members with no experience to learn
the basics using copper before continuing with their own projects. The workshop is available every
week during normal term time, except half term. All tools are available. There is help in ordering
silver.
Beginners should come regularly for the first few weeks, but later come when you can. No
restorations or repairs please! There is a weekly charge of £2.50 which covers basic materials,
workshop expenses, U3A fee and tea/coffee. Silver is available at cost.

SINGING
Sheila has been singing in choirs in and around Woking for many years and now enjoys
passing on the experience she has gained. She has agreed to set up this new singing group for U3A
members and says ‘if you feel you would like to sing but can’t read music, come and join up (also
those who can read music!). We learn as we go along and sing anything from Bach to Lloyd–Webber!

SOFT FURNISHING / UPHOLSTERY
Members should bring their own items to work on, such as small chairs, drop-in seats, headboards,
curtains, lampshades and should also bring basic tools. The Group Leader will assist with the
provision of some materials and with individual tuition of most soft furnishing techniques. Call the

TECHNOLOGY and CHANGE
This is a course based upon an Open University Course of the same name. The leaders had planned
the course to extend for three years. We have completed the three years but found we have not
completed the course. We are therefore extending it for another year to take in industrialization
abroad and the aspects of social change that it brought about here in the UK. Participants are
expected to help with research and be actively involved in the monthly meetings

THE NOVEL
Members of the group read the chosen book before each monthly meeting, which is quite an
undertaking. The book may either be a classic or a very modern publication. The book is not read
together during the meeting, apart from illustrative extracts when discussing narrative techniques,
style, atmosphere etc. It is really quite an academic group, with members expected to participate and
contribute freely. All shades of opinion are expected and received with enthusiasm. (N.B. this group
is not involved in writing novels!)

TOLKIEN GROUP
This is a small group which meets monthly to study and discuss the works of J R R Tolkien. Particular attention is paid to The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit but the group aims to examine many aspects of Middle-Earth as presented in The Silmarillion, The Chidren of Hurin and other works. The radio, film and stage adaptations of Tolkien’s works will be considered.

WALKING
All walks start at a meeting point which will be advised at the start of term by the Group
Leader. All meeting points have a CAR PARK and are up to 45 minutes from WOKING. The distance
of walks is about four to six miles taking two to three hours. Walking shoes/boots are essential and
waterproofs if inclement. If the weather is severe, members are advised to check with the Walk
Leader before setting out.

WALKING / RAMBLING
Rambles, roughly 10 miles long, are taken at a moderate pace, and last all day. There is a lunch
break at a pub, with a picnic option for those who prefer it, about half way round. The outings are
principally in Surrey, but Sussex, Hampshire and Berkshire may also be visited. Since walks take
place in all weathers and terrains, stout footwear and waterproof clothing is essential.

YOGA
The aim of the class will be to maintain flexibility, strengthen the body and cultivate good health in a non-competitive and relaxed environment. The group will concentrate on the classical yoga postures and breathing techniques of Hatha Yoga. All abilities are welcome – anyone who has doubts about the suitability of the class should consult their doctor. |
